Firebird-Style Pickup – PAF Sized

This is my take on the classic Firebird pickup – and yes, it’s often mistaken for a Mini Humbucker. They might look similar under the cover, but they’re built very differently.

My versions are the real deal, not just a regular humbucker under a closed cover.

A Mini Humbucker works much like a regular PAF-style humbucker, using a bar magnet to charge the polepieces. A Firebird, on the other hand, uses vertical bar magnets inside the coils, which actually act as the polepieces themselves. In many ways, it’s closer in design to a Fender-style pickup – and that’s undoubtedly where the added brightness and clarity come from.

The result? Tight low end, crisp highs and a lovely open top end that cuts through without getting harsh. It’s got all the character you’d expect, but with a bit more sparkle and definition.

Built Properly – The Old Way

No shortcuts here. This one’s put together with vintage-correct materials and construction:

• Wound with 42 AWG Plain Enamel wire, 6K Neck and 7K Bridge.

• Alnico 5 magnets

• Reflector plates over and under the coils, just like the originals

• UK Made Nickel Silver baseplate

• UK Made Nickel Silver / nickel-plated cover

• Traditional braided hook-up wire

It also comes supplied with mounting screws and springs, ready to drop straight in.

If you’re after that distinctive Firebird snap and chime — without muddying things up — this’ll do the job nicely.
